Language school or tutoring? What’s the best way to learn a foreign language? Learning foreign languages is not a privilege but a necessity. Today, everyone who dreams of a good job and good earnings should know at least one foreign language at an advanced level. Meanwhile, learning languages is not an easy thing, on the contrary – it requires a lot of self-denial and dedication of a considerable amount of time. What are the best ways to learn a foreign language for people of all ages?

The most popular method of taking foreign language lessons today is enrolling in a language school course. Once they were built only in large cities, today they can be found even in smaller towns. Often people employed in language schools are native speakers or people for whom a foreign language is their mother tongue. A wide selection of courses, good prices and convenient hours of classes are undoubtedly the advantages that language schools can find today. Their large number on the market means that they often offer their students numerous discounts and promotions on courses, thanks to which we can learn, for example, a second language for half the price. What’s more, the people employed in the language school are professionals who know the foreign language inside out. The downside, however, is that we can hit a person who cannot convey their knowledge in a friendly and clear manner – some language schools employ students or teachers with no experience in order to fill staff shortages.

Unfortunately, the teacher has to adapt to the weakest person in the group, which can delay learning, especially for beginning groups of students. What’s more, the program is focused on general language learning (unless we choose specialized courses) – so it is not possible to stop at the issue or topic we are interested in. In general, however, language schools are eagerly chosen by both children and adults as a place to learn a foreign language. The language schools offer is rich, and additionally, it allows you to choose courses at higher levels of proficiency, including specialist ones.

Many people choose foreign language tutoring conducted by students, native speakers or professional teachers. The price for a lesson is very diverse – in larger cities we will pay much more, but we can find real experts on the subject there. Tutoring has the advantage over a language school that it allows you to completely adjust the level of foreign language knowledge to the classes conducted. Topics that are better absorbed by the student may be treated briefly by the teacher, while those that require more time will be discussed in more detail. Additionally, the teacher will adapt to the hours when the student can study. The place of tutoring is also optional – you can learn at home, in a co-working space or even online. Any form,which will be agreed with the tutor is good. The downside of tutoring is the possibility of finding a teacher who will provide us with incorrect information or will not be able to teach us the language. Unfortunately, today anyone can become a tutor, which affects the quality of teaching and prices on the market.

Self-study
Some students do not want (or do not have time) to attend language schools or to be tutoring from teachers. They choose to learn independently, usually with the help of appropriate books or Internet programs. Only the issues that require more extensive discussion are consulted with the tutor, but it is incidental. Is this way of learning likely to be successful? Yes, but we must adhere to some important rules. First of all, you cannot learn a language yourself completely from scratch. You can continue to learn a language on your own, but starting from scratch, we will not learn the language at an advanced level. Moreover, this form of learning requires a great deal of self-denial.
There is no room here for “I don’t want to today”, “I don’t have time today”, “I’ll catch up tomorrow”, “I will study more tomorrow”.By using this kind of excuse, we will certainly not learn the language, we will only waste our time. Additionally, self-study is not completely free as it sometimes seems. It requires considerable financial outlays for the purchase of books or licenses for Internet programs. The materials available for free on the Internet may be a learning aid, but they certainly will not teach us the language from A to Z. The effects of self-study must also be monitored on an ongoing basis, preferably with the use of language tests. If it does not bring the expected results, you have to decide to take lessons with a teacher or a language school.
