Types of sea containers

There is nothing to cheat, containers are an integral part of all sea transport. In most cases, they are in the form of metal boxes with classic dimensions and are used to transport all kinds of goods. What is worth knowing about this?

How is a sea container built?

Certainly, many people among us have repeatedly seen a rectangular box, the dimensions of which were similar to a small building. It probably included walls, doors, floor and roof. However, few people realize where the so-called gooseneck is , as well as the hooks responsible for securing the entire container.

The steel structure of the container itself is both the base and the corner posts. The frame, in turn, is built right along the load-bearing beams, as well as the girders and transverse beams. We must not forget that the floor of the container must handle both the mass of the load and withstand the pressure of maneuvering around the stacker along with the specific goods. On the inner walls and the floor of the container, we will meet with handles for securing a given load. The most solid part of the entire container are, of course, the corner posts with the upper and lower corner fittings, which allow the container to be lifted, placed and secured. We cannot forget about the double doors, which are mounted on hinges welded to the above-mentioned posts. They are characterized by their water resistance and are closed with two to four locks with holes for seals, and padlocks. At the very top, of course, there is a roof on which we should not place anything at all. What kinds of containers do we have?

Universal container

Containers of this type are intended for the transport of any general cargo. It is also worth mentioning that if we make temporary or temporary modifications, they can be used to transport bulk cargo. No matter if they are powdery or liquid. The former should be transported in the so-called big beg, which is loaded pneumatically and fills the entire interior of the container. During unloading, a container tipper semi-trailer or just a suitable pneumatic device is necessary. Neutral liquids can be transported using so-called flexitanks.

Container with an open roof

Such containers are mainly used when a given load is greater than the height of a standard container or loading is impossible for handling reasons. The construction of the container is very specific and allows us to use the entire door opening and the roof. The walls and floor of such a container are equipped with mounting brackets.

In turn, the roof of the container is very often covered with a special waterproof tarpaulin, which is previously equipped with a rope with a customs closure. When dealing with so-called hardtop containers, the roof is fully steel and the door opening has no top beam. We must not forget that both hard top and open top containers are reserved for specialist equipment. Therefore, you should buy them with a special order and take into account the higher costs.

Container with an open roof and side

This type of solution is intended for the transport of loads that cannot be transported by using the above-mentioned solutions. The construction of the floor with properly embedded walls makes the fastening and securing of goods not too difficult tasks. It is also worth mentioning that such containers have a relatively thick floor.

Platform container

Designed for the transport of bulky and heavy loads . Its load capacity is as much as 40 tons. The durable floor allows for the transport of loads characterized by high point pressure. This type of solution is most often used for the so-called port-port relationship.

Tank container

As any of us can guess, it is a solution intended for the transport of drinking liquids or liquid chemicals. Its design must comply with IMDG standards. However, when transporting foodstuffs, it is imperative to use containers marked “Potable Liquids only”. The capacity of such a container is 20,000 liters. However, it is only 80 percent filled to prevent spillage of liquid.

Refrigerated container

This solution is intended for the transport of loads that require a specific constant temperature. Therefore, their walls are filled with special polyurethane foam, and the floor is made of appropriate aluminum T-gratings that fulfill the tasks of an air channel. The temperature that can be kept inside is approx. + 25 ° C – -25 ° C, but only until the difference between the outside and inside temperature is not too great.

As you can see, there are many types of sea containers. If we are going to choose one of them, be sure to specify what we expect and our purchase will certainly not be wasted.
